Understanding Torrent Tracker Protocols
When you add trackers to your torrent client, you are adding servers that help peers find each other. But not all tracker URLs work the same way. The three main protocols โ UDP, HTTP, and HTTPS โ each handle peer discovery differently.
UDP Trackers: The Speed King
UDP trackers are the most common choice for performance-focused users. Unlike TCP-based protocols, UDP does not perform a handshake before sending data. Your torrent client sends a tiny binary announce packet, and the tracker responds with a peer list. The entire round trip typically takes under 20 milliseconds.

HTTP Trackers: The Compatible Fallback
HTTP trackers use standard web requests over port 80. They are slower than UDP because they involve a full TCP handshake, but they work in virtually every network environment.
HTTPS Trackers: Privacy Meets Performance
HTTPS trackers encrypt the announce data between your client and the tracker. This prevents your ISP from seeing which trackers you are connecting to. The encryption overhead is minimal โ typically adding only 5-15ms.
Which Protocol Mix Should You Use?
- Primary: Add 5-8 fast UDP trackers
- Secondary: Add 3-5 HTTPS trackers for privacy
- Fallback: Keep 2-3 HTTP trackers for restrictive networks
